    Great video Mark, very clear on the rules. It’s a shame they have been banned as others have said the cryptica hybrid doesn’t appear to be very invasive and can easily be maintained in one’s own garden. I can think of dozens of much more invasive plants that aren’t banned like running bamboo. I wonder if it might be possible to reintroduce the true Gunnera manicata from Brazil again at some point in the future and then only allow propagation via suckers rather than seed so that it doesn’t hybridise with any existing cryptica?

    Hi, nice Rostrata ! I plan to add one to my garden as well, did not know about them until I saw your video. Is it really needed to plant that way , with that mound? How about the Trachycarpus, doesn't it also need well drained soil? Why did you use the donut shape there? Does it need more water than the Yucca? I also have a Trachicarpus planted, but smaller, and I put some gravel and sand in the hold for drainage.. Any advice appreciated thanks. All the best !

    • @MarksHouseandGardenUK
      @MarksHouseandGardenUK День назад

      Hi. It's a good observation about the trachycarpus doughnut. To explain. I did that primarily because of the damage I did to the roots in moving them so I wanted to support them whilst they get re-established. I think your gravel approach is ideal too. Mark

    • @MarksHouseandGardenUK
      @MarksHouseandGardenUK День назад

      Hi again. I'm thinking weed membrane covered in gravel. But not decided on the membrane yet. Maybe just gravel. What would be your approach?

    • @greatnorthernexotic
      @greatnorthernexotic День назад

      @@MarksHouseandGardenUK I didn't use weed membrane for a couple of reasons: firstly any weeds that self-seed in the 30cm of gravel are easy to pull out because there's nothing solid for them to attach their roots to, but also I want to scatter some drought tolerant annuals through the bed, such as California poppies. As for the gravel, I used a locally sourced 10mm gravel called Yorkshire cream and mixed in some similarly coloured rocks and boulders I already had. To make a more naturalistic look, I think using lots of rocks is essentially, and maybe mixing in different grades of gravel (including coarse sand) - but of course it's entirely down to taste. 😃

  • @greatnorthernexotic
    @greatnorthernexotic День назад

    It's a frustrating situation as for the majority of those planting gunnera in our gardens, it is in no way invasive. As far as I know it's only become a problem in certain parts of the west coast of Scotland. I made a video pondering in what to do with one that I recently dug up - a beautiful specimen plant which will now go to waste.

    • @MarksHouseandGardenUK
      @MarksHouseandGardenUK День назад

      I agree. I've been nurturing these to go by the pond and now they'll just get pot bound and be wasted.

  • @christinabullen2021

    • @MarksHouseandGardenUK
      @MarksHouseandGardenUK День назад

      Hi Christina. I think that's a good solution yes. I did that originally. I think it's the flower spikes which cause the problem rather than the roots. I may resort to that in the end. Thanks. Mark

    you sir are a saviour! Strangely enough (just before finding your video) after days of research, I'd shortlisted this very pump from the very same website! Its so difficult to find accurate data on solar pumps and pondkeeper was about the only place where the claims weren't clearly nonsense. Ive seen much smaller, cheaper, pumps claiming ridiculous flow rates and one even state it weighs 2500kgs?!?! Even on B&Q their "specs" are complete and utter nonsense. And they're making completely different claims for flow rates for the same pumps in lph and gallons. I made a water feature last year with an ebay pump claiming 400lph last year, it just about does the job but more likely is about 150lph. I doing larger one this year and want better (and higher, about 1m head) flow. Fairly certain I will go with the 800 from pondkeeper, however one thing im not clear on is it seems to suggest the switch over from solar to battery (when it clouds over) is a manual process? That you need to press the button on the solar panel to do so? Could you confirm if this is the case please Mark? (seems odd if so, I just want it to run regardless without needing to press anything if it clouds over) You should ask pondkeeer for a promo code (and freebies for you) since folks are watching for the update on your new fish pond. Thanks for the video

    • @MarksHouseandGardenUK
      @MarksHouseandGardenUK День назад

      Hi there. I'm not entirely sure about the answer to the switch thing but I believe it is automatic as mine just keeps going until a couple of hours after dark then starts on it's own next day. Pondkeepers did give me a discount code but unfortunately it got abused by a discount code website so it had to be pulled sadly. I'll be speaking to them very soon so I'll ask again. Thanks. Mark

Whereas the Filoli gardens in Northern California (USA) admission runs at $36.00 USD for adults and children over 5 years at $28.00 USD! 😢 Sadly, most American families can't afford peaceful garden outings.
